Third Class of SIU Family Medicine Residents On Board

The third class of Alton Memorial Hospital’s SIU School of Medicine Family Medicine residents have begun making their rounds. Members of the Class of 2026 are Dr. Muhammed Owais Khan, Dr. Michael Iskander, Dr. Muhammad Abbas, Dr. Catherine Greene, Dr. Kyla Swain and Dr. Anne Ugabi. AMH now has a full roster of 18 residents on campus.

Dr. Muhammad Owais Khan likes to go by his middle name, Owais, or Dr. Khan. He grew up in Villa Park, Ill., a small northwest suburb of Chicago. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He says he is ecstatic to be back in his home state and serving “the beautiful town of Alton!” He is a big fan of Chicago sports, especially the Bulls and the Bears. Other hobbies include playing sports, watching anime and board games.

Dr. Michael Iskander hails from Toronto, Canada, and is a former medical representative and describes himself as a customer service-oriented resident. He earned his medical degree from AUA College of Medicine in Antigua/Barbados and also holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He is a certified lifeguard and avid musician. Michael values teaching his patients and building excellent rapport to ensure the best patient care possible.

Dr. Muhammad Abbas was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and has lived in Malawi (Africa), Houston and Toronto, all before the age of 10. He spent the rest of his childhood in Toronto and went to York University for his undergrad in Kinesiology and Health Science. He got married to his beautiful wife, Insia, in Dubai just before beginning medical school at Avalon University School of Medicine in Curacao. He loves travelling and exploring different cultures and cuisines. He also enjoys going on hikes and playing sports.

Dr. Catherine Greene is a Houston native. She graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor’s in Biology. She earned her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She chose Family Medicine “because it offers me the honor of serving my patients to the fullest capacity there is, from within the clinic and out in our community.” In her spare time, she enjoys catching up on reading and watching thrillers and well as writing and publishing poetry (she is working on my second book). “I look forward to helping AMH excel in patient care.”

Dr. Kyla Swain was born and raised in Downers Grove, Ill., and got her start studying Bioengineering at the University of Illinois. With leadership and community service always standing at the forefront of her education, Kyla has served as a tutor to her peers, worked on the executive board of multiple student organizations, and volunteered at free health clinics in the community. Driven to work on the front lines of patient care, Kyla attended Trinity School of Medicine in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. While there, she became heavily involved in reproductive justice through AMSA and Medical Students for Choice. She has used the training and experience gained from these organizations to immerse herself in AMSA’s advocacy network at both a local and national level. She hopes to continue to advocate for her patients throughout her career as a family medicine physician. In her free time, Kyla enjoys hiking, practicing the french horn, and playing with her two rabbits, Minerva and Artemis.

Dr. Anne Ugabi is originally from Manchester, England, and earned her medical degree from American University of Antigua. Her hobbies include hitting the gym, trying new restaurants and “telling my dog he’s a good boy.”
